Theory of Writing
After working through my theory of writing, I understand that the act of writing to be very important. I find it important because I think everyone should be able to write, to be able to get your thoughts out of your head and think critically to improve as a person is intensely important to me. I find writing very hard, but with the help of reflection and feedback I think anyone could be a master writer through practice. In this essay I will be discussing how English composition 101 has helped me start my path as a competent writer.
I have some current struggles that I still need to work through though. I find it hard to find multimodal devices that help me enrich the subject of which I’m talking about other than just pictures. I used a video in my first writing assignment, but I had stumbled upon the video in researching the essay. The video was just a simple 5 minute meditation and my essay was about meditation so for me it was simple. For my second and now this essay I am having trouble finding other forms of multimodal devices. Sometimes, I find it difficult coming up with a plan for my drafts. It takes me longer to make a plan it takes me to type out the actual essay. I still have trouble properly citing, which I think comes from a fear of my essays being wrongly failed for plagiarizing. I feel like I have a poor vocabulary and therefore my essays and general communication suffers. This can be fixed by reading more and remembering new words that I have not heard, maybe even looking up the definitions of these words.
I feel like I accomplished much throughout this class. One such accomplishment is I feel like I can complete an essay in full. Before this class I had no idea on how I would go about writing an essay, now I can plan and write an outline and finish a paper. I feel accomplished in making an ePortfolio, a personal essay about a topic I knew a good amount about and an essay about a topic I knew very little about. I went and performed interviews and I also went to a place that related to my topic to learn about such an environment.
I feel like I gained some abilities from taking this course as well. I feel like I’ve become a better reader. I can read things faster and stay more focused doing so, before this class I had trouble staying focused while reading long walls of text. I have room for improvement for sure, I can always do better and should strive for continuous improvement. I feel I have gotten better at being a writer, I still have a long way to go in that department though. I can get better by practicing more, and doing more writing assignments. I am taking the sequel course ENG 102 so I will be getting tons more writing practice. I’ve become better at thinking critically, I feel like I’ve always been a good critical thinker, but this class has allowed my critical thinking to be improved. This course gave me a diverse range of texts for me to read and I took what I read from those texts and incorporated them into my own writing. I can vividly remember thinking critically during my second essay when I was coming up with questions to ask people in an interview format. I had interviewed people before and even interviewed people scholarly, I helped my boyfriend interview people for a paper he was working on.
I feel like that was the start of my rhetorical thinking. Thinking about how people were going to answer the questions I was going to ask them. I took that into the rest of the paper, I tried to fully understand who was going to read the paper. I am focusing on my rhetorical knowledge when I am writing now even when I am outside of this class. For example, I had to write a resignation letter and I had to use pathos, even though I had not felt sad I was leaving. I understood that my audience was going to be my manager and I needed to find the right words so she wouldn’t feel bad telling people that I was going to leave. I had to think critically, to find the best words and the right time to submit the letter.
I am continually developing my processes outcome, I still have trouble with structuring my essays, but I feel like they tend to have a flow to them and that’s what I try to tap into. Sometimes I miss the mark, but I always try to find that specific way that feels like a good easy read. I have developed two writing projects with multiple drafts and twenty writers' journals. I understand the process of composing a paper and the different ways projects needs separate ways of going about drafting, planning and invention of ideas for those projects. I am practicing reflective writing all the time and am currently doing so. I strive to be better and I think reflective writing really helps everyone improve with what they are reflecting on.
I am developing my knowledge of grammar, punctuation, and spelling through composing and revising. I am a strong believer in “practice makes perfect” if I keep on practicing writing that all of the linguistic structures will come naturally through experience. In my second essay I tried to get the sense that I was in a bustling arcade which used the tone outcome.I make sure to cite all sources I use like my multimodal devices. I understand concepts like copyright and what is legally allowed to use, I have published videos to YouTube and some videos got taken down because of copyright.
I feel there were two habits of mind that resonated with me most during this course, these habits of mind, I will take throughout my academic career and personal life are curiosity and metacognition. I will definitely use the rest of the habits of mind, but the two mentioned resonate with me more than the others. I feel like curiosity spoke to me because I had this habit of mind since I was a child and had always wanted to keep a curious mind. I ask questions when I am trying to learn things, either asking to myself or to whomever is teaching me the information. Some people think I’m being sarcastic, but I am genuinely curious about the information if I’m asking questions about it. Metacognition is extremely important to me because this is also how I learn. I reflect on the things that I do that are wrong, figure out how I can fix such a problem then learn and grow from it. I use metacognition in my everyday life at work and in school.
I need to work on my vocabulary in my future, building a vocabulary so I could explain what I need from people or just explaining how I feel for other people who may not understand.I will keep all of the habits of mind in all of my future assignments and past that, I will keep these habits of mind throughout my life. I need to get better at rhetoric and tone, my writing sometimes could use a bit more tone. The tone of my first essay was purely positive and I think if I included some negative sides to the area of focus. I also need to work on my quotations. I think I could have added a lot more to my essays if I had done a little more research on the web. I could have added quotes to those essays from the articles I read online about my topic. My main fear is that my whole paper would be full of plagiarism because at that point I wouldn’t be sure what was my own thoughts or if it was the article that I had read. All-in-all I think that I’m on the right track and I just need to focus on keeping the habits of mind like metacognition in my future to keep me on this path.
I hope to continue my writing efforts gained in this class and in the next class I take ENG 102 and work towards being a competent writer. I will strive to always improve and use feedback positively. I believe that writing is intensely important, I want to become better at it and I think I’m on the right road to become proficient. I do think this course has improved many aspects of my life, I use many of the habits of mind at work and with my relationships. I am glad I ended up taking this course and I look forward to implementing the ideas presented in a practical way throughout the rest of my life.Thank you for reading.
